WRC launch new financial well-being workshops
by Souleymane Ouedraogo
Last month the WRC launched their new financial well-being training workshops in their Cardiff office.
The first of its kind, the workshop was attended by sanctuary seekers and refugees, including women, young families, and older people.
The aim of the workshop was to inform people about the various forms of support and assistance available, and how to apply according to their status. Raising awareness about existing support systems can make a big difference in helping sanctuary seekers to live fulfilled and integrated lives in Wales.
Gareth, the Housing Policy and Research Lead, provided information on a case-by-case basis. For example, weekly financial support for applicants, study opportunities, and grants. For refugees, he discussed the procedure for applying for Universal Credit and the documents produced.
Housing was also discussed in the workshop. How do you start the re-housing procedure once you have been granted refugee status? How much do you have to pay for rent?
And finally, how can someone find their place in the world of work? Government support can help cover essential costs in the short while for those with the greatest need. But through employment, people can gain financial independence and security to help build a life for themselves.
“Gareth was very clear in explaining and delivering the workshop. We learned a lot of new things we did not know before.” Participant feedback
It was an interactive workshop with a lot of input from those who attended. We parted on a note of confidence and joy, in the hope that this information will help sanctuary seekers and refugees in their daily lives.
Sharing financial well-being guidance with sanctuary seekers and refugees in this workshop was made possible thanks to the Oak Foundation.
The Employability programme at the Refugee Council offers practical careers advice to help sanctuary seekers and refugees find the perfect opportunity to suit their needs. Find out how to sign up for an online or in-person workshop here.
