Athina Summerbell: Head of Communications, Engagement, and Policy
Hi, I’m Athina — Head of Communication, Engagement, and Policy at WRC.
I live in the heart of Carmarthenshire with my husband and whirlwind of a dog, Peanut. I grew up in a former mining village, where resources were often stretched and opportunities limited — and where charity services were a vital lifeline. That early awareness of how crucial support networks can be, especially in under-served communities, is what first sparked my passion for this kind of work and continues to fuel it today.
One of my absolute favourite things about working at WRC is the people. I’ve genuinely never been part of a more warm, supportive, and passionate team. Everyone here brings such dedication to the mission, and that shared energy and commitment make all the difference.
This work is also deeply personal to me. My grandmother was a refugee, and growing up, I saw first hand how difficult it was for her to integrate, the barriers, the isolation, the lack of awareness. It left a lasting impression. I carry her story with me every day, and it’s what drives my belief that no one should have to go through that kind of struggle alone. Wales can be a place where refugees are safe, welcomed, and able to thrive — and that’s the future I want to help build.
I’m especially passionate about Wales truly become a Nation of Sanctuary, where displaced people are not only welcomed with dignity, but given real opportunities to rebuild their lives.
In my role, I’m proud to lead an incredible team focused on clear, impactful communication, meaningful engagement, and thoughtful, evidence-based policy. We don’t just work behind the scenes, we advocate, we collaborate, and we connect with communities to make sure our work reaches those who need it most.
And when I’m not working on strategies or campaigns, you’ll probably find me exploring the Carmarthenshire countryside with Peanut or hunting down my next great flat white.
