Nicholas Wysoczanskyj: Ukraine Manager
Привіт, мене звати Нік!
Hi, I’m Nick! I’m the Ukraine Manager and lead the Ukraine response and widening of dispersal team here at the Welsh Refugee Council.
Together, we work across Wales to support Ukrainians and other sanctuary seekers as they rebuild their lives and find a sense of home here.
At heart, I’m a people person. I love connecting with others, hearing their stories, and finding ways to make a difference in their lives. For me, this work isn’t just a career—it’s deeply personal.
My passion for helping refugees comes from my own family’s story.
My grandfather came to the UK as a Ukrainian prisoner of war and political refugee after World War II. He was given refuge here, and that act of kindness changed everything. Without it, I wouldn’t be here today.
Growing up, my Ukrainian heritage was always part of who I am. My name alone often sparked questions. People would see it and ask, “Polish?” I’d proudly reply, “No—Ukrainian.” Back then, during the Cold War, Ukraine wasn’t even on the map for most people. “What’s Ukraine?” they’d ask, and I’d dive into telling its story. I’ve been telling that story my whole life—long before it became front-page news.
February 24, 2022, changed everything. Like many Ukrainians, I knew my family and friends back home would fight for their freedom with everything they had. It wasn’t just a choice; it was survival. That knowledge drove me to leave behind a nearly 20-year career in film and television to help in any way I could. First, I joined the Welsh Government’s response supporting Ukrainians, and now I’m here, working alongside an amazing team at WRC.
Every day, I feel grateful to be doing this work. It combines my love for people and my deep sense of connection to my heritage. I truly believe that by helping others, we create a better world for all of us.
For me, this isn’t just a job—it’s a way to give back and honor the kindness that changed my family’s story all those years ago. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
