Accessibility Statement
At the Welsh Refugee Council, we want everyone who visits our website to feel welcome. Whether you’re reading, listening, translating, or adjusting your screen settings, our aim is to make your experience as smooth and inclusive as possible.
We believe that everyone should be able to access information and services online without barriers. That’s why we’re committed to making our website easy to use for everyone. Creating a truly inclusive digital space is part of our wider mission to stand up for fairness and equality.
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) set standards for improving online accessibility. These guidelines outline three levels of conformance: A, AA, and AAA. Our website aims to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which is considered the benchmark for creating a fair and inclusive digital experience.
How we create accessible content online
To make our website as accessible as possible, we:
- Include alternative text to convey the meaning of images
- Write buttons and link text that is informative and adds meaning
- Create accurate closed captions for video content
- Use the WebAIM colour contrast checker to test text and background colour to meet a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text
- Have adapted our website layout to respond to the size of the browser window, adapting content to make the website accessible on smartphones and tablets
- Review feedback and test new features to meet our users’ needs
Recite Me assistive technology
We want as many people as possible to use our website with ease. To help, we offer the Recite Me assistive toolbar, which lets you personalise your browsing experience.
With Recite Me, you can:
- Listen to our content using text-to-speech
- Change background colours, text colours, and fonts
- Adjust font sizes, spacing, and line height
- Zoom in up to 200% without losing content or functionality
- Translate content into over 100 languages, with 65 text-to-speech voices
- Download page content as mp3 files
- Switch to a simple, text-only mode
- Navigate using just a keyboard
We offer these tools because everyone deserves to access information in the way that works best for them.
Our accessibility efforts and ongoing commitment
We know accessibility is an ongoing journey, not a one-off task. We are always looking for ways to improve the experience for every visitor.
While we do our best to ensure all content meets accessibility standards, there may be times when something isn’t fully optimised. This is often because we’re still testing or looking for the best possible fix. If you notice something we could improve, we’d love your feedback.
Reporting accessibility problems
If you come across something that doesn’t work well for you, we’d like to know. Please get in touch and we’ll do our best to provide an accessible alternative. We aim to respond within 5-10 working days to requests that require a reply.
If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your feedback, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS). The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for ensuring that websites meet accessibility standards.
Third-party content
Sometimes we include content or tools from third-party providers. While we can’t control every aspect of these services, we always aim to work with partners who share our commitment to accessibility.
