Esther Gomes: Move-On Service Manager
Hi I’m Esther and I manage the Move on Project for the Welsh Refugee Council.
What does it mean to rebuild your life in a new country?
As Move On manager at the Welsh Refugee Council, I support newly granted refugees take their first steps toward secure and hopeful futures in Wales. Since 2016, I’ve worked with a dedicated team to provide tailored support, from helping refugees navigate housing, education, and employment opportunities to fostering the independence they need to thrive in their new communities.
I understand the challenges of starting over in an unfamiliar place, having experienced reintegration myself. This fuels my commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment where others feel valued and empowered to overcome obstacles. Whether it’s offering practical advice or connecting refugees with vital resources, I strive to make every step of their journey smoother.
Before joining WRC, I built a successful banking career, progressing from management trainee to Head of Training and Development at an international bank. These experiences sharpened my leadership, mentoring, and problem-solving skills—qualities I now use to empower refugees on their journeys.
Outside work, I’m a proud wife and mother of two daughters who enjoys music, current affairs, and reading. Together with the WRC team, I’m honoured to help sanctuary seekers flourish and realise their potential in Wales.
