Annie: Sanctuary Coalition Cymru Vice Chair
I am a passionate advocate for refugee rights and a dedicated leader within the Welsh asylum and refugee community. Since 2021, I have actively volunteered with the Welsh Refugee Council (WRC) and served as an Ambassador for City of Sanctuary and Red Cross VOICES. My lived experience as an asylum seeker has fuelled my commitment to ensuring that advocacy efforts genuinely reflect the voices of those directly affected.
Currently, I serve as Vice Chair of the Sanctuary Coalition Cymru (SCC), working to amplify refugee voices in policy discussions. In 2022, I played a key role in supporting a UNHCR visit to Wales, coordinating asylum speakers and sharing my own experiences to highlight the challenges we face. My advocacy continued in 2023 through my collaboration with the Red Cross VOICES Project, which led to an ITV interview shedding light on the realities of asylum accommodation.
I was honoured to be a lead speaker at the Nation of Sanctuary Conference at the Welsh Parliament (Senedd), where I spoke about the gap between policy and practice in asylum matters. In 2024, I continued this work with Sanctuary in the Senedd, helping fellow asylum seekers engage directly with policymakers. That same year, I was deeply honoured to be nominated for the WRC’s Nation of Sanctuary Award, by the Red Cross, for my contributions to Welsh life.
As asylum seekers and refugees, we understand the pain of being uprooted — but we also know the power of being heard. Sharing our stories isn’t just about seeking understanding; it’s about driving change. In a Nation of Sanctuary, every voice matters, and every step forward is built on the courage of those who dare to dream of fairness, dignity, and hope for all.
