Our response to “restoring control over the immigration system” white paper and speech
At the Welsh Refugee Council, we hear the stories every day — of people who fled war and persecution, seeking safety and a chance to rebuild. They are not strangers. They are our neighbours, colleagues, and members of our communities.
We understand that many in the UK are concerned about immigration — those concerns are understood and deserve a serious response. But fear cannot shape policy. The current asylum system is broken — it leaves people in limbo, blocks them from contributing, and serves no one well.
The Home Office has a responsibility to deliver a fair, functioning, and humane asylum system. One that protects those in need, processes claims efficiently and upholds the UK’s commitment to justice.
Refugees and migrants contribute every day — in our NHS, our businesses, our schools, and our communities. When people are welcomed and supported, they thrive — and so does society.
But government also has a wider duty: not to fuel racism through hostile rhetoric or sweeping generalisations. Language matters. Dehumanising migrants stokes division and leads to real harm.
This is a moment for leadership — not showmanship. We urge the UK Government to build a system that works, and a narrative that unites. Because when we welcome with fairness and dignity, we don’t just help refugees — we build a stronger, more compassionate country for us all.
