Welsh Refugee Council’s Vladyslava Zhmuro honoured in Liverpool

On 26 October our very own Vladyslava Zhmuro was honoured with a spectacular projection of her portrait at Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, unveiled by broadcaster and TV personality, Chris Tarrant, OBE.

To celebrate the work of amazing individuals tackling the refugee crisis, the National Lottery have unveiled a showstopping projection of a portrait of Vladyslava, a caseworker on our Ukraine team. The artwork, created by Ukrainian artist Sergey Piskunov, depicts a hyper-realistic portrait of her as a projection on the building of Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, recently announced as the host city for the Eurovision song contest 2023, on behalf of 2022’s winners, Ukraine.

“The work from Ukrainian artist Sergey Piskunov is breath-taking and to see the portrait projected onto the iconic Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool – which will show its support of Ukraine next year by hosting the Eurovision song contest on the country’s behalf – honours Vladyslava’s story beautifully. I’m incredibly proud to unveil the artwork and shine a light on the work that the Welsh Refugee Council is doing with the help of The National Lottery funding.” said Chris Tarrant.

Tarrant, who welcomed a Ukrainian family into his own home following the outbreak of the war, teamed up with the National Lottery to highlight the inspiring work that Vladyslava has been doing to support people who are in the same situation she found herself in earlier this year. She came to Wales in March 2022 after fleeing Ukraine where she joined us at The Welsh Refugee Council as a caseworker and is now part of our Ukraine Project team.

“There are so many people displaced in this world, and I feel incredibly lucky to have found safety in the UK. I want to thank everyone who has helped me so far and everyone who supports Ukraine. I’m honoured to be featured in such a powerful artwork drawing attention to the refugee crisis. It’s been a privilege working with The National Lottery and the talented Sergey Piskunov. Only together can we help those in need.” said Vladyslava.

We are so proud of Vladyslava and the crucial work she does to support Ukrainian sanctuary seekers arriving in Wales.
