Your Career, Your Future

Early Careers with Transport for Wales

Take a look at one of our favourite partnerships! This October, the Welsh Refugee Council has joined up with both Transport for Wales and Oasis to deliver our next “Your Career, Your Future” recruitment programme. For this, we looked specifically at the Early Careers entry routes into Transport for Wales, specifically their graduate scheme, apprenticeship scheme, internships and work experience opportunities

The Welsh Refugee Council and Oasis started as always by sifting the best possible group of candidates. This programme was open to both refugees and asylum seekers, giving those who do not yet have the right to work the opportunity to prepare for their future and be ready to take on a job once they receive their papers. With major interest in the programme, we had over 35 registrations, from which we identified the 20 candidates with relevant qualifications and strong English language skills to be most ready to work in the environments of Transport for Wales.

On the first day, Transport for Wales delivered an engaging introductory session, making sure that the career opportunities on offer suited the short-listed candidates. Oasis kindly hosted the session at their wonderful space in Splott, providing breakfast, teas and coffees for the group, making everyone feel at home. On the second day, the real work then began. The candidate took part in this situation judgement tests, answering typical recruitment questions for the industry.

This was followed by a mock assessment centre and group task, in which the group looked at typical customer queries, how these are handled professionally, and what standards are expected within an industry such as rail, infrastructure, construction and engineering

What do our participants say about the programme?

All participants agreed that the programme either met or went beyond their expectations in terms of practical support and guidance. Particularly, all mentioned the kindness and quality of the delivery of the Transport for Wales early careers team, asking for more of these programmes to be run in the future to give our cohorts the best chance of securing meaningful work.
